African Volunteers Helping African Orphans

These are some of the African volunteers who work for Hearth to Hearth Ministries. No one at Hearth to Hearth Ministries receives a salary. Several of the African volunteers receive a small stipend so that they can afford to live. Many African volunteers just work for food and the ability to send their children to our schools. We would like to give all of the African volunteers a small stipend when the funds become available.

Pastor Maurice is the administrator at Hope for Children Center orphanage where he is a volunteer Hope for Children Center Orphanage Volunteers:

Maurice Odhiambo Maina Anyango is the Administrator of Hope for Children Center Orphanage. Under his leadership a new orphanage has been built and over 250 children have been taken into the Orphanage. He and his wife, Edith, have three sons--Austine, James and Frances.

Scholastic is a volunteer cook at Hope for Children Center orphanage1. Scholastic Adhiambo – Has been our cook for two years. She is a very dedicated widow woman about thirty-six years old. She has four children of whom two are staying at the orphanage. The other two children are staying back at home with her co-wife. The ones in the orphanage are three years old and six years old. The ones at home are thirteen and nine years old. She really needed assistance. She has been a very faithful volunteer as our head cook. She lives at Hope for Children Center Orphanage with the orphans and also serves as our matron.

2. Mary Atieno Otieno – Volunteered to help with cooking and has been very dedicated. Her husband is still alive and they have three children. One of her sons is already married, the other one is in high school, and her daughter is in teachers’ college. She does not live at the orphanage. She stays at home but volunteers every morning just out of love for the orphans. Mary is about forty.

3. Mary Odero – She is about thirty and a widow with three children, ages ten, seven and five. Her children were not attending school due to lack of uniforms and school fees. Mary has been so helpful. With the small stipend she gets from volunteering at the orphanage, the children can now attend school.  She lives in a home which is too far away from the orphanage for her children to attend our school. She comes in the morning to volunteer in the kitchen with cooking and serving.

4. Ogodo Lipia – This volunteer is about sixty-five. He has much experienced in cooking ugali, a staple in their diet, and that is why we accepted him. He had worked for schools and institutions with many children. He looks very strong and energetic. Ogodo Lipia is a widower and needs a lot of assistance. Some of his married sons have died leaving him with about seven orphaned grandchildren, and these orphans are all looking for assistance from him. He lives at home, which is far from the orphanage, so they cannot always come to feed from Hope for Children Center Orphanage. He really appreciates our stipend, though small.

5. Maurice Ondiek –  Is our night guard. He is forty-seven and has so many orphans to care for. Some are orphaned by the deaths of his late brother and sister. He also has a wife and children of his own. He uses the stipend we give him to care for the five orphans that are living with him. He does not stay in the orphanage.

6. Omolo Radet –  Is sixty-seven and a widower. He had really wanted us to at least give him some work so that he can help his grandchildren—eight orphans from his two daughters and son, who live with him in his home. So he comes every morning from home to volunteer as our day guard.

7. John Omwodo –  A widower of about forty-six who has four children to care for. He is our other night guard.

8. Philip Otieno –  A very dedicated thirty nine year old man who offered to volunteer at the center. He helps with bringing supplies needed when the Hope for Children Center orphanage administrator is busy and, also, he volunteers in the Education Department. He has one wife and four children of his own. The children are not at the orphanage.

9. Sam Odera –  Is about thirty-one. His father died about ten years ago and his mother just died last year. He is very much dedicated in helping us. He has other siblings to care for and needs assistance. He is our storekeeper, in charge of all supplies.

10. Shadrack Mwai Akenge –  A widower of about forty-eight years of age whose wife died last year in April, leaving him with four children to care for as both their mother and father. He is volunteering as one of our grounds men, helping with farming and cleanliness of the compound. He does a great job at the orphanage but does not live there; he sleeps back in their home, which is very near to Hope for Children Center Orphanage.

11. Joseph Mwai Oluoch –  Is fifty-seven years old. He volunteers as one of our grounds men and on the farm. He has a wife but his wife never gave birth and so after his brother died, he took his brother’s wife and her six children. [Wife inheritance is common in Kenya.] They have no income whatsoever with which to feed the children and the children did not even go to school due to poverty. He works at the orphanage and goes back home.

12. Moses Owilli – Moses is about thirty-four. He has served as a church elder in the local Adventist church. He does a lot of Bible study with the children and also is helping us with the farm. He is married and has four children.

13. Iscar Omega – A widow whose husband died about four years ago. She is very good in making ladies’ dresses and is training our children. She is very soft spoken and keen in whatever she does. She is just volunteering her services for the sake of getting food. She has three children who come to eat at the orphanage. She does not live far away from the orphanage and comes every day for the training.

14. Odero Ongere –  Is very good in making men’s trousers and coats. He is training our children very well. He is just volunteering with out receiving a regular stipend. Even with all the experience he has been jobless, because he cannot afford to buy a machine for tailoring.

15. Jane Atieno Nyamache – A sister to Carolyn Nyamache and Vincent. She is about twenty-one. She dropped out of school after her grade eight due to lack of school fees. Then she did a tailoring course. She still lives in the orphanage and has also volunteered to help train our children.

Glory Children’s Center Orphanage Volunteers:

Pastor Moses and his wife Prisca are the administrators for Glory Children's Center orphanage where they both volunteerMoses Nyamora and his wife, Prisca Moses, are the Administrators of Glory Children's Center Orphanage, where they are caring for 126 orphans. They have four children of their own, Rogers, Vane, Loren and Shelline Esther, and they also care for three children belonging to Moses' sister.

 1. Patrick Oigara –  Is forty-four and a very special asset to the work at Glory Center Orphanage. We appreciate his good English skills and his ability to communicate with us. Patrick has worked with Moses for over two years without pay. He is the child coordinator and is also a chef by trade, so volunteers in the kitchen to make sure that the meals are good for the children. His family consists of wife, Yuniah, two sons, Humpriey and Victor, and two daughters, Lucia and Winfrider, all aged four to thirteen. Patrick lives with the boys in the dorm but his family stays in their own home. Patrick once wrote, “Sister Esther, I will never be discouraged from volunteering for these children. I know God will not leave my family to suffer.” We love Patrick and are thankful for his dedication to this work.

2. Bornverse Nyabuto Gutwa –  Is forty-three and has volunteered as Head Cook for Glory Center Orphanage for over a year. His family consists of wife Fridah, son Charles (ten), Josphine (seven) and Marceline (three). He is a very dedicated volunteer.

Norah is a volunteer that washes clothes for the orphans.
3. Norah Kwamboka – This lady is Prisca’s sister. She is a twenty-eight year old widow with two sons, Isaac and Denis. She, together with others, has volunteered for two years in helping our orphans in washing their clothes every day. She and others work together also in doing general cleaning in the dorms. She is a wonderful lady who is very helpful to our orphans.

4. Ruth Ongachwa –  Is twenty-six and has worked for Glory Children's Center Orphanage  since their arrival in Kisii. She is the Assistant Matron who cares for the small orphans in their dorms. She is very helpful to these younger children and also helps with any work  that is needed. She is a dedicated lady.

5. Glades Onyanbu – Glades is a twenty-eight-year-old widow with three children, who is working as our Head Matron. She is in charge of the girls’ dormitory and also helps in  the kitchen. Since her husband died, there was no way for the children to go to school, but  now  her children are attending school in our orphanage school. They are now a happy family. When Moses and Prisca are away, Glades and Patrick Oigara take care of everything.

Ombati is a volunteer at Glory Children's Center orphanage
6. Ombati Rogoncho –  Is twenty- eight and volunteers as a janitor at Glory Children's Center Orphanage. His family consists of his wife, Damaris and children Violet and Gichora. This man has had a very difficult life as an orphan himself, so did not go to school. When he came to us he was in a very bad situation but now he is happy and is able to walk proudly. He is doing a very good job for us.

7. Lispa Nchaga –  Is a twenty-one-year-old orphan. She is a tailor and is helping by repairing the children’s clothes and making uniforms for them. She is doing a very beautiful work together with Naomi Ntenga. These ladies are helpful to us in so many ways. They are also assisting Prisca when she makes sweaters for the children, using the knitting machine.

8. Naomi Ntenga –  A twenty-year-old orphan who volunteers with Lispa Nchaga (see above).

9. Edinah Kerubo –  A twenty-seven- year-old volunteer whose husband divorced her when he married another wife, leaving her alone with four children. She helps at the orphanage  by taking care of the store (this is what they call the supply room) and serving the children during mealtime. She also helps by going into villages to look for fresh fruits and vegetables. Most of them that are found in the market are not fresh. Edinah is very, very helpful to us and enjoys her job. She lives a bit far from the orphanage so her children are not able to travel to our school.

10. Abel Moranga – Abel is helping in getting us wood. Without this man we could not cook any food. He makes sure that every day he has prepared wood for the day. He is very  important to us. Abel and his wife have four children. They are a very poor family and his children were not going to school but now they are attending school in our orphanage school. He is a good man and dedicated in his work.

11. Onderi Anyieni –  Is thirty-five and is married, with four children. He is now our watchman at night. The safety of the children is a primary concern and, in a country with so many suffering, even storing grain can put them at risk. He is a good man who is doing a good work.

12. Jared Nyaosi – This man works in the field. Pastor Moses donated some land for planting some vegetables and tomatoes, so this man is volunteering on our new garden where we are soon going to plant. Jared is twenty-nine-years old and has a wife and three children. He is a strong man and his work is good.

13. Beatrice Koroba –   Is our first orphan to graduate from our orphanage—in 2005. We love Beatrice for her work that she is doing. Beatrice is a beautiful and talented girl with a gift for music. She is training the children in singing and is also a spiritual leader and a very good teacher. She would like to further her education, which will make  her a good teacher in our school. We pray that God will open a way for her to have the instruments she needs to produce her own songs, of which she has now written six. She is a wonderful lady in our home.
